Japanese Papercutting Techniques:
Kiri-bori: The artist makes one tiny hole by twisting
a half cylinder shaped knife in a paper. This task is
repeated to create a design or pattern. 100 holes
can be created in a 1cm square. The pressure used
in twisting the knife changes the size of each hole.
Dougu-bori:Two blades are combined to create a
shape to be used on a design. This is called a
"dougu" (tool). A craftsman starts by selecting the
appropriate dougu from about 100 choices or by
creating a new dougu.
Tsuki-bori: Layers of papers are placed on a board
that has holes. A craftman then puts his knife on the
papers vertically and proceeds by lifting the knife up
and down to create a design.
